Program Overview

The International Master Program of Material Science and Engineering (IMP-MSE) is designed to prepare students to become international talents with solid theoretical knowledge, excellent research abilities, extraordinary innovation abilities and vast international vision.

MSE-Tsinghua ranks No.1 in China and Top 10 of the world in 2018 MSE QS Ranking. With the solid academic & research foundation, IMP-MSE aims to create a platform for international communication, promote mutual benefits in both domestic and international materials science and engineering field, and furthermore, enhance the internationalization of SMSE scientific research and graduate education.

Program Highlights

International Curriculum Design: English courses representing the cutting-edge of Materials Science and Engineering, covering six main research concentrations in this field and offering solid fundamental knowledge and vast learning space to students.

International Faculty Team: Domestic and international top-level experts sharing advanced Materials Science and engineering experiences from both developed and developing countries and encouraging learning flexibility and innovation.

International Research Platform: SMSE hosted a number of national and ministry-level key laboratories and centers, aiming to offer students chances to combine theories & practices, to pursuit creative, interdisciplinary and high-impact research covering a wide range of topics.

Featured Field Trip Arrangement: To share Chinese experiences and enhance international communications, SMSE designed field trips to well-known Chinese enterprises in different regions for students to understand materials sciences and engineering development& applications in China, at the same time, to get prepared for the future careers.

Merit-based Scholarship Support: Full tuition waivers and monthly stipend are provided for outstanding applicants on a competitive basis.

Study Plan

The IMP-MSE program lasts 2 years (could be extended to 3 years due to special circumstances).

Admission to IMP-MSE Program:

International applicants could apply for this program in the online application system of Tsinghua (https://yzbm.tsinghua.edu.cn/intlLogin) during the designed THU application period.Applicants should fill in the application information online, upload the application documents listed below to the Online Application System, and pay the application fee (800RMB) online at the time of submission.

Application requirements:

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.

-Applicants should be in good health and of good character, be well-behaved and be willing to abide by China's laws and regulations, as well as Tsinghua's rules

-Bachelor's degree or equivalent

-English proficiency test certificate (Non-native speaker: TOEFL 85 or IELTS 6.5)

-Two recommendation letters from scholars who have the title of associate professor or above or are senior professionals in the related field

-Transcript of academic record, research and awards 

-Passport personal information page

- Personal Statement (The personal statement should be completed directly in the application system. PhD applicants are also required to upload a brief research experience or research plan.

Admission schedule:

1st Round: 8:00am, Oct 15th, 2023 —— 5:00pm, Dec 15th, 2023

2nd Round: 8:00am, Jan 1st, 2024 —— 5:00pm, Mar 1st, 2024

Rolling: Mar 1st, 2023 ——April 30th, 2024 (based on vacancies)

Please note: You can apply either the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) or SMSE Scholarship to support the IMP-MSE program. In order to apply the CGS, please make sure you submit your application within the 1st Round.

Both scholarships are full scholarship, however the CGS guarantees you a room at campus but SMSE Scholarship only guarantees the dormitory of your first year study.
